What an almighty mess!  The Tories are virtually leaderless and Labour Party is in meltdown!

I am utterly dismayed by the reasons that some voters have given since Thursday for voting ‘Leave’. I respect those who had thought through the issues although I would want to challenge their logic. But when I hear “Because Obama wanted ‘In’ “, “I just wanted a change”, “I need a bigger house for my six children”  and ” I’m frightened that we’ll be overwhelmed with Turkish immigrants” I despair.  The most extreme  was an elderly ex soldier, who, weeping with hysterical joy, exclaimed “I’ve got my country back.  Germany doesn’t rule us any more.”  He seemed completely ignorant of one of the fundamental purposes of the EU – to keep the peace between previously warring countries.

I cannot ignore the role played by the British tabloid press either in stoking up scare stories about immigration and loss of sovereignty.

Our Liberal Democrat beliefs in tolerance and equality, and our belief in Britain as an outward looking nation are more important than ever.
